The idea for a symphonic metal band was first dreamt up by James in early 2005. In April, James proposed the idea to his fellow acquaintance, Jamie Edwards, who he knew had played piano for many years. Not thinking too seriously of the matter, Jamie agreed to a couple of practice sessions. After those two sessions were through and some concept material was written, a date was set to jam with a drummer never met in person by James or Jamie. Patrick Eulitz had then joined the group. After three idea tracks were recorded, James played them for his friend Cory Certa. Interested in the idea of being in a band, Cory agreed to play bass guitar. After three meetings or so, the group's first song was complete. The name of Shield of Wings was thought up by James and agreed on by the group not only to be the name of the song, but the band name as well.

Around mid 2006, Cory Certa left Shield of Wings due to musical differences and started his own band. Cory recorded the bass lines for Anthropos and Eden and The Letter's Fantasia. He also played one show in February of 2007 to help out while Shield of Wings was actively searching for a bassist. Tryouts for a new bassist took place over a period of nine months.

The search for a bassist was looking hopeless until Jeff Olsem in May of 2007 joined Shield of Wings and was exactly the kind of sound, enthusiasm, and energy that Shield of Wings needed to jump start into a new era. August 19th, 2007 was considered by most of the band members as the last live for awhile if not indefinitely because drummer Patrick Eulitz was leaving for college. Shortly after, Shield of Wings received an invitation to play at the Congress Theater in Chicago. This was an amazing opportunity that could not be missed. Shield of Wings decided to continue and keep on persevering through the distance barrier. Shield of Wings shall continue.
